Run the pump long enough
In Karachi's summer, circulate the water 8–12 hours a day. Stagnant water is where algae starts. If your pool sees heavy use or sits in full sun, lean toward the higher end.
Test and balance chemistry weekly
Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.8, free chlorine around 1–3 ppm, and total alkalinity near 80–120 ppm. Out-of-balance water wastes chlorine and irritates skin. Test strips are cheap; a 10-minute check each weekend saves a green-pool rescue later.
Skim, brush, vacuum — in that order
Skim leaves and surface debris daily, brush the walls and floor weekly to dislodge biofilm, then vacuum. Brushing is the step most people skip, and it's the one that prevents stubborn staining.
Clean the filter on schedule
For sand and cartridge filters, backwash or rinse when the pressure gauge reads ~10 psi above its clean baseline. A clogged filter forces the pump to work harder and circulate less — raising both your bills and your algae risk.
Catch algae before it spreads
The first sign is usually a faint slippery feel on the walls or a cloudy tint. Hit it early with a shock dose and extra circulation. Prevention beats cure: keep sanitiser steady and never let the pump sit idle for days.
Watch the water level
Heat and wind drive off a surprising amount of water. Keep the level at the skimmer midpoint — too low and the pump can run dry; too high and the skimmer stops catching surface debris.
Cover it when it's idle
A pool cover cuts evaporation, keeps out dust, and slows chemical loss. Even a simple solar cover pays for itself in reduced top-ups and sanitiser over a single Karachi summer.
Manage the dust and the heat
Karachi's dust loads up filters fast and feeds algae. Rinse the deck and surrounding plants before dust settles in the water, and plan shade where you can — less direct sun means slower algae growth and lower chlorine burn-off.
Save energy with smart pump timing
Run the pump during off-peak hours and consider a variable-speed pump — it can cut filtration energy sharply versus a single-speed unit running all day. Lower running cost means you can circulate more, not less.
Service equipment before peak season
Have pumps, seals and automation checked in spring, before the May–August rush. A failing pump at the worst possible time is the most common cause of a lost summer.
Prep for monsoon and the off-season
Before heavy rains, clear overflow channels and debris screens so stormwater doesn't flood the pool with contaminants. In the quieter months, a reduced but consistent circulation schedule keeps equipment healthy.
Know when to call a pro
Persistent cloudiness, repeated algae, strange noises from the plant room, or rising bills all point to an underlying fault — usually filtration, plumbing or automation. Catching it early protects both the pool and your budget.
